An association of people who won’t give up on the forest.
Mais Pinhal is a non-profit, non-partisan environmental association dedicated to defending the Ovar Dunes Forest Perimeter and its biodiversity.
Mission
To stop the degradation of the Ovar dunes pine forest and secure forest management that protects the forest, the coast and the communities — today and for future generations.
Values
- Scientific rigour — we work with biologists and researchers
- Independence — non-partisan and non-profit
- Action on the ground — from invasive species to parish assemblies
- Community — the forest belongs to everyone and is defended by everyone
The story
In 2021, intensive resin-tapping in the Cortegaça forest alarmed the local population. In 2022 the clear-cuts foreseen in the Forest Management Plan began — large areas of century-old trees felled entirely, some just a few hundred metres from the sea.
Out of that indignation Mais Pinhal was born: residents, scientists and friends of the forest who organised to monitor the cuts, expose bad practice, control invasive species and take the case to Parliament and the European Commission.

Ongoing actions
Petition to Parliament and the European Commission
We demand the suspension of clear-cutting and a new management plan, publicly discussed with citizens and experts.
Invasive species control
Regular actions removing acacias and other invasive species that are replacing the native dune vegetation.
The Camarinha Project
We collaborate on protecting the camarinha and on environmental education — guided walks, schools and citizen science.
